Dear Friends,

You’ve not heard from me for quite a while, so after a few months “off air”, I thought it was time to get in touch with a brief update before the year is out.

2019 was an exciting, busy and very successful year, involving a lot of travel, every single trip being a highlight in its own right.

In addition to my many years of engagement as a brand ambassador for PÖDÖR Öils, at the beginning of the year I became an ambassador for Difference Coffee, the London-based importer and roaster that, in my opinion, produces the best coffee in the world. I also became a culinary ambassador of LSG in summer, one of the largest airline caterers in the world. From the beginning of next year also for FrieslandCampina and for their brand Debic.

My year began with a trip to Ecuador and a visit to the rainforest, followed by a multi-day event at Zazu, a Relais & Chateaux restaurant in Quito.

Over Easter, I first appeared as guest chef at Mandarin Oriental, Marrakech, then at Sani Beach Resort in Greece, and finally at a private dinner in Hong Kong.

It wasn’t long before I was back in Hong Kong again – this time for a guest chef event at the Jockey Club in Happy Valley.

The Jockey Club regularly extends invitations to some of the world’s best and prominent chefs. It was our third visit to this very traditional club, and we were delighted to be able to welcome more than 450 captivated guests over the three days. We will undoubtedly return again soon!

I would have liked to have reported at this point that a new Restaurant by Thomas Bühner was about to open. But unfortunately those plans fell victim to the demonstrations in Hong Kong that broke out then and are still continuing.

Two more exciting events took place before the summer holidays: one on Santorini, the other at Monte Rei Golf & Country Club in the south of Portugal, just before the summer break.

In October, I set out for Hong Kong again – joined by some of you, this time. We were a group of 20, and spent an amazing week in my dream city. We visited the restaurants Amber**, Caprice***, Lung King Heen*** and Haku. We also had fun attending a cookery course together and visiting one of the many markets in the city. Fortunately, we did not encounter any demonstrations.

In November, we set out again for a trip to South Korea, where we carried out three highly successful gala evenings – two at the JW Marriott Hotels in the megacity Seoul and one at the Sheraton Incheon.

As you can tell, Asia has become one of my most important markets. Hence my delight about the latest cooperation: I was appointed Culinary Consultant to the Marriott Kaohsiung in Taiwan on 1 November 2019. So of course I took a short detour from South Korea to Taiwan to check out the markets there and, of course, to start planning the new restaurant in the Kaohsiung Marriott Hotel, which is currently under construction.

In December, we will fly out to Jakarta again to put on a number of events at the Raffles Hotel there. The year will close with a few more or less private events in Beijing.

All in all, an exciting year, full of highlights and unforgettable moments. I am very grateful to be able to experience all these things and to get to know so many special people on my travels. But I am equally grateful to be able to come back to Osnabrück, which continues to be my home, where I can recover from my journeys and recharge my batteries – and, above all, spend time with my wife.

I am already planning the next events for 2020, as well as some new projects. After my plans for Hong Kong came to nothing, I continued to develop my ideas for a new restaurant concept, and am already in talks about it. I also have plans for a book project and another accompanied trip, this time to Tokyo. Should you be interested in joining me, make sure you have a few days free in October.

I wish you all a wonderful Advent and Christmas. If you need any gift ideas, feel free to browse my online shop.

Let's stay in touch

Best wishes, Thomas
